Well, the year is coming to a close and what a great year it has been. Business is tight and every step of the way we had to prove our abilities.
We continue to have much Inverter service work and battery service. It has been 3 full month since an update and all of those times Farm Energy has had its share of work in the renewable field.

It has been recognized that small business and doing a few renewable energy products would not be able to fill the plate.
We do however have to keep up our skill sets as the below projects had required. During the last quarter we used our Electrician, Electronics, Machinist, Millwright and Engineering Trades.
Being that true Green Energy company continues to be tested even internally and it is a corporate goal that is monitored internally daily.

Solar installations were done on Multiple Roof tops and Safety is of the most concern here.
Having these on sloped roofs may save on mounting costs, it does however require the use of scaffolding, ladders, catwalks and harnesses.
This is not new to FEI, but does show customers that assist use little or no safety equipment. Our pride is in no lost time and no injuries through full Task assessment prior to starting any process.

Our ability to project management and readiness assessment has shown this. No compromise and no shortcuts using the right tool for the right jobs.

A big interest in Solar and Wind energy off set systems has been the latest focus. The reduction of generator run time has been asked mostly by our customers and this 8 to 20 panel installations has made this cost feasible. We have also had the opportunity to install an automatic system transfer when lower voltage battery is reached and return transfer back when solar only recharged the battery bank. This is a new trend that shows that charging from the Grid for low periods is not acceptable to the right winged Green person as charging efficiency losses are not accepted. So we know our strength and that these engineered systems help our clients.

The inverter repair and service continues to dominate the service call sector. That 20 year comprehension and understanding of these machines in stand alone, Charge status and stacked-in multi unit operation has been the asset.
Although we offer some field repairs the removal, proper repair and testing is best left for the Bench. We have had much Industrial scale inverter service and utilizing our specialty equipment and meters was a must.

Battery installations are also never ending. Customers rely on their storage.

There are 12 Kaneka Thin Film Silicon PV Modules mounted on his house roof. The roof is southwest facing and gets sun all day long.  These panels are 60 volt 60 watt panels, and are great value for the money (150.00) per panel. The panels are connected to a Xantrax DC disconnect box in the basement of the house.  This Xantrax DC disconnect box also contains the breakers to shut of the power from the panels, power to the charge controller and the DC power from the battery bank.

The battery bank is a 24 volt DC 1500 AMP hour AGM battery bank.  The AGM batteries are maintenance free, never gas and don’t need to be watered.  With good care this battery bank should last 15 to 20 years.

The charge controller used is an Outback Power Systems unit.  This takes the high voltage from the panels and converts it to 24 volt DC to charge the battery bank.  The unit does the MPPT tracking to get the most efficient use of the solar energy into the battery bank. 

The inverters that were used are Xantrax DR Series Inverter/Charger.  They are 24 volt DC input and 120 volt AC output at 3600 watt.  The output is non-sine wave.  These units are connected together using the communication cable so that there is 240 volt power to the sub panel.  The inverters are also used to charge the battery bank where there has not been enough sun for 3 days or more. Power is sent from the inverters to the sub panel that was installed alongside the existing panel.

We installed a 24 circuit FP sub panel next to the existing circuit breaker panel; it is fed from the inverters and has a 60 amp 2 pole circuit breaker protecting the panel.  We moved 90% of the house circuits to this panel.  The only circuits that we left on the old panel are the AC, Inverter charging, generator start panel/timer, and 1 duplex outlet in the basement beside the panel.

Charging of the battery bank is mostly done by the solar panels but there are times when there is not enough sun over the period of a week and the system needs to charge the battery bank using grid power.  This is done 2 ways.  The customer had previously bought an 8 KW NG generator with transfer switch.

The charging of the battery bank is controlled by a generator start panel, it measures the battery bank voltage and when it drop to a pre-set level will signal either the generator to start or for the system to charge from the grid.  A Omron timer controls when the system goes to generator or to grid to charge based on the time of the day.  The generator will start during the day (peak hydro time) and run for 4 hours to charge the battery bank up, at night it will go to grid (non-peak time).

The system works and looks great.  The customer is thinking of installing 14 more panels in the spring.

Battery Testing
The operating Room back up systems. We required to discharge 4 batteries and stress
test to verify that the units will handle the load as designed.
We found that 1 was bad to start with and second was not able to handle the load past 30 min and 2 past properly.

These AGM Rocket batteries are 130 LBS at an  12 volt battery.
The customer requires a letter that the units passed a certain test standard basted
on the combination of load and discharge.
Inverter testing was performed on the charge rate on Bulk, Absorbsion and Float, Transfer switch, transfer modes,
Wire connections and corrosion areas.

The inverter sub panel was inspected and all breakers tested and reset and all receptacles that are color coded
in the operating room reviewed to make sure they match.
One was found to have a red cover and was not a backup receptacle.
We have also been asked to quote on a Natural gas generator install
at this location as the 2 operating rooms and recovery room do require
more than the Emergency backup supply will carry.

New requirements are in place to have this process and review of capacity annually.
We have been asked to perform this every year going forward. Once we have this fully done and reviewed.

I inspected a solar installation and advised on all the non compliant installation items.
I also checked his batteries and he had 16 AGM 12 volt all into a 48 volt bank.
Turned out 15 terminal screws were loose. 5 batteries poor or discharged and 2 failed.

As a third spot today I had a large AGM 24 volt battery at a Goat farm.
He complained of the power failing and the voltage changing quickly up and down.
I load tested each cell to find one bad cell.
We have to locate one of these within days as I temporarily bypassed one cell and now only run on 11 cells.

This process if acceptable for a short charge cycle and a discharge before
charging again and not to overcharge the other remaining cells as there
is no place to put this once it charges each cell.

 This is a good part of our service work and our customers
are extremely pleased with this service and our competencies.

It was great to work on 1kw Bergey today.
We were able to hoist down the turbine and repair the electrical components that were damaged.
replaced the rectifying circuit and some old transfer wiring.
lifted it up back in place like new to start making power again.

Like always it was great to service another customer that needed us.
